Why Your Child Might Be Clumsy in the Water This April: The Science of the Spring Growth Spurt

If you’ve lived in Hampton Roads for a few seasons, you know that April is the month when everything suddenly blooms. But it’s not just the azaleas at the Norfolk Botanical Garden that are reaching for the sun, your kids are likely doing the same!

There is a fascinating bit of pediatric science that many parents don’t realize, children actually tend to grow faster during the spring months! While you're busy realizing their sneakers from last fall suddenly don't fit, we’re seeing the effects of those growth spurts right here in the Fishbowl.

The "New Body" Syndrome

Have you ever noticed your child suddenly tripping over their own feet or bumping into doorways? When kids hit a growth spurt, their brains have to "re-map" where their hands and feet are. In the world of sports science, this is called adolescent awkwardness (though it happens to the little ones, too!).

In the water, this effect is magnified. A sudden inch in height or a bit of extra length in the arms can completely change a child’s:

  • Center of Gravity: Where they float changes as their limbs get longer.
  • Stroke Reach: That perfect freestyle arm entry from February might suddenly feel off because their reach has extended.
  • Buoyancy: The change in bone density and muscle mass during growth spurts can affect how high or low your child sits in the water.

If your swimmer seems a little clumsier than usual this month, don’t worry, they aren't losing their skills! They are simply learning how to drive a "new body".

April: The Month of Re-Calibration

While May and June are usually the "show-off" months, when we head to the Chesapeake Bay or join neighbors at the neighborhood pool, April is the quiet, essential re-calibration month.

By staying consistent with lessons in April, we give your child the space to find their balance again. We focus on:

  1. Refining the Kick: Adjusting to longer legs to ensure they are still driving from the hip.
  2. Breath Timing: Making sure their new reach isn't throwing off their head rotation.
  3. Building Confidence: Reminding them that it is okay to feel a little wobbly and that with a few laps, they’ll be more powerful than ever.

The Katie’s Kickers Approach: Growing with Your Swimmer

At Katie’s Kickers, we don't believe in a "one size fits all" lesson, mostly because our students are literally changing sizes every week!

Our milestones approach is designed to be adaptive. We pay close attention to these physical shifts, adjusting our drills to meet your child exactly where they are today. Whether they are a "Guppy" just finding their fins or a more advanced swimmer refining their stroke, we help them harness that new spring energy (and those longer limbs) into becoming stronger, more confident swimmers.

So, the next time you notice those jeans are looking a little short, remember it might be time to get back in the pool and re-calibrate. Let's get them ready to shine for the summer season ahead!
