Beat the Heat and the Boredom: Why July is the Best Time to Start Swim Lessons
Can you believe it’s already July, Norfolk? It feels like just yesterday we were packing up the backpacks for the last day of school. But now, we’ve officially hit the middle of summer.
The initial excitement of sleeping in and having zero schedule has started to wear off. Maybe some of your June summer camps have wrapped up, the kids are starting to mutter the dreaded phrase, "I'm boooored," and that midday July heat and humidity is making the backyard feel like a sauna.
If you’re looking for a way to keep your kids active, safe, and entertained without melting under the Virginia sun, we have the perfect solution. July isn't the time to wind down, it’s actually the absolute best time to dive into swim lessons at
Katie’s Kickers. Here’s why:
1. The Perfect Midday Cool Down Activity
When the afternoon thermometer hits 90°F in Hampton Roads, playing at the park or riding bikes on the hot pavement just isn't an option. Everyone ends up retreating indoors to screens.
Swim lessons offer the ultimate compromise. It’s a high-energy, physically engaging activity that completely wears the kids out, but keeps them entirely cool and shaded. Whether they are splashing in our outdoor pool or burning off energy in the water, it’s a healthy, screen-free escape from the peak heat of the day.

2. Defeat the “Summer Slide” (Water Edition!)
Parents often worry about the "summer slide" when it comes to reading and math, but did you know it happens in the pool, too?
If your child took swim lessons in the winter or spring, they built up incredible momentum. However, if they take a couple of months off, those hard-earned skills, like independent floating, breath control, and proper kicking, can start to rust. July is a critical bridge month. Consistent lessons right now ensure that the progress they made earlier this year sticks with them for life, turning those emerging skills into permanent muscle memory.
3. A Built-In Summer Social Hour
By mid-summer, kids can start to miss the daily social interaction of the classroom. Group swim lessons are a fantastic, low-pressure environment for kids to make new friends.
At Katie's Kickers, our classes are packed with high-fives, shared achievements, and plenty of giggles. Your child gets to cheer on their peers, practice turn-taking, and bond over learning a cool new skill. It gives them a consistent weekly routine and a familiar group of buddies to look forward to seeing every week.
