June Spotlight: Exploring Marine Life Safely While Swimming in Hampton Roads
Summer in the Hampton Roads isn’t just about swimming, it’s about discovering our ocean’s hidden world. This month, Katie’s Kickers invites families to dive deeper by pairing swim lessons with marine-awareness skills. It’s not only fun, it’s smart water education!
1. Wave & Wildlife Watch: Awareness is the First Step
When your child’s splashing near Sandbridge or First Landing State Park, teach them to:
- Observe movement in the water: “Is that just the current, or something alive?”
- Keep respectful distance from wildlife such as crabs, fish, even dolphins, who are common nearshore visitors.
- Understand that safe swimmers are still cautious observers.
In swim class, our instructors weave in teaching kids to pause, look around, and surface calmly before swimming on.

2. Emergency Float as a “Spot-and-Scan” Tool
Treading water and floating aren’t just stroke skills, they’re survival tools. If swimmers learn to pause on their backs and look around, they can:
- Assess if ripples are just water and not a stingray or turtle.
- Communicate to parents/lifeguards: “Hey, I need a safe route.”
At Katie’s Kickers, kids practice surface pauses while scanning, turning calm float time into confident situational awareness.
3. Sensory Swim Lessons: Feel the Sand, Hear the Surf
Lessons can be more than arms & legs. They’re full sensory experiences!
- Learning how sand feels against your ankles before wading teaches comfort transitioning from land to sea.
- Hearing ocean waves, footsteps, or distant call of seagulls helps swimmers stay present, calm, and focused.
- These sensory anchors actually reduce panic: children associate “beach sounds” with control and fun.

4. Parent and Child Debrief: From Pool to Shore
Every session in the ocean should end with a quick 5-minute coastal chat:
- What did your child see today?
- Did they feel any current or unexpected wave?
- How did they emotionally respond?
This empowers parents to reinforce curiosity and caution at the beach and helps instructors adapt lessons based on what real interactions kids had that day!

Make This June Meaningful
- Build strong strokes and strong awareness
- Practice real-world readiness for beach days
- Foster respect for our local marine neighbors
